Scrip is any substitute for legal tender. Scrips have been used throughout history for payment of employees and for use in local commerce at times when regular currency was unavailable. For example, in remote coal towns, military bases, ships on long voyages, or occupied countries in wartime. Many forms of scrip have been quite common, such as company scrip, land scrip, vouchers, subway tokens, arcade tokens and tickets, and even those “Green” Stamps from the 1950s and ’60s.
